Sound

Sound, voice and music are very important to films and add to our understanding. The earliest silent films were often shown with live musical accompaniment. Sound enhances the imaginary world on screen.Sound is more than music it makes up 60% of what is happening on screen  70% of this sound is added in afterwards.Diegetic sound is any sound that the character or characters on screen can hear. So for example the sound of one character talking to another would be diegetic. Non-diegetic sound is any sound that the audience can hear but the characters on screen cannot.
Sounds are used in films to add emotion and rhythm to a film. They consist of a variety of things:

  • Music (copyright)
  • Atmospheric sound
  • Diegetic and non diegetic
  • Sound effects
  • Dialouge
  • Foley
In class we watched a scene from Casino Royale. The scene was the Airport Chase scene.  There was a range of different sounds that were dietetic and no dietetic. A soundtrack was used in the scene to heighten the drama and add to the audience viewing experience. Other sounds used in the screen were dialogue, sirens, screeching of tires and a plane.
