Question 3
What kind of media institutions might distribute your media
product and why?
Film distribution is the process of making a movie available
for viewing to an audience. This is normally the task of a professional film
distributor, who would determine the marketing strategy for the film, the media
by which a film is to be exhibited or made available for viewing, and who may
set the release date and other matters. The film may be exhibited directly to
the public through either a cinema, television or online release through
streaming services such as Netflix. The distribution stage in the film industry
is one of the most important stages in film making but is often referred to as
'the invisible art', a process known only to those within the industry, barely
written about and almost imperceptible to everyone else. Distribution is about
releasing and sustaining films in the market place. In the practice of
Hollywood and other forms of industrial cinema, the phases of production,
distribution and exhibition operate most effectively when 'vertically
integrated', where the three stages are seen as part of the same larger
process, under the control of one company. Lionsgate is an example of a
distribution company that generated the seventh-highest gross revenue in North
America in 2015. If I could chose a distribution company to distribute my film
I would choose Lionsgate, as they have distributed a large amount of films of
varying genres, including Thriller films. An example of The Hunger games
series, these films have the main protagonist as a teenager, and much like our
film therefore I believe Lionsgate would be confident in releasing our film.
Our film would be released straight to cinema as Lionsgate distribute their
films to cinema to be viewed by audiences and get money from ticket sales.
Lionsgate is a global company and is well known because of this our film will
be viewed by a much wider audience.
